3 out of 5 stars Handy, but not perfect!   May 28, 2008

I have two cars, one a Honda CRV with the aerial right at the back on the roof and the other an MX5 with the aerial on the rear wing. MX5, works well, no problems at all but the Honda was more troublesome with variable signal level on the radio due to the greater transmitter range required. The position of the connecting lead from the Kensington had a considerable effect on the signal received.

As has been noted here before, keep the sound level down from your MP3 player otherwise the transmitter is overloaded and distorts the audio. Also turn off any equaliser setting for the same reason.

2 out of 5 stars Spoilt by interference   March 26, 2008

Great looking gadget, had high hopes for success but the hissing interference between tracks is also audible during the quiet sections of music and this spoilt my listening experience. So my advice is, if you enjoy interference free music, wait until the technology improves.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Signal, simple to use   January 30, 2008

Bought this on the strength of the reviews here. I can say that this is an excellent transmitter in my setup: Ford Focus with Creative Zen Stone.

The display is backlit orange so it's easy to use in the dark.

The instructions say set the volume on the MP3 player at around 75%, I found that seems to cause a little distortion on the treble of the music, so I set the Stone to 50% and turned up the volume on the car radio. Problem solved.

I've found that it seems to be quite a powerful transmitter as it can overpower local stations, this may be due to the fact that the transmitter is plugged into the power right below the radio.

One thing which I would have liked would have been a USB power-out on the transmitter so that I could power the Stone via USB. Not a big deal as I'll buy a seperate device to do this if need be.

Overall I'd recommend this - it's a little more expensive than similar transmitters but I'm happy with the extra cost for a better device.

--- EDIT AFTER 2 MONTHS USE ---

I've found that the cable which goes from the transmitter to my Zen has developed a fault. In some positions the left speaker doesn't output sound, but moving the wire around gives a crackle as it makes connection. It seems that due to this, the transmitter thinks there's no sound and switches itself off unless I'm moving the cable. Will be contacting Kensington for assistance.

--- UPDATE EDIT ---

I contacted Kensington for support but the UK distributor referred me to Amazon for support. I contacted Amazon who have sent a replacement unit.

After reading some of the reviews of other FM transmitters I was unsure what to expect. However I have to say, the Kensington transmitter ROCKS!!! Great sound quality, provided you've chosen a "quiet" frequency. Set-up couldn't be simple. I didn't even bother reading the instructions, just plugged it into my 12v socket and my MP3, turned up the volume and it works... It's so portable I take it with me on business trips where I frequencty drive hire cars all over the world. Much simpler than hauling a case of CDs around.

Top product, very simple to tune in and to get working. Signal fantastic, even when using mainstream radio frequencies it continues to play my MP3 songs without interruption. My journey is M25 (Dartford Tunnel/Essex side).
