2 out of 5 stars design fault   August 17, 2007

if you have one of these and they cut out,its because a spring is to weak(cheap) which then doesnt keep the pressure up and circuit breaks.if you unscrew end and let shiney metal bit fall out you will find the tacky spring probably wrapped round the fuse.pull them apart and nip one end to stop fuse working its way up or get a better spring out of a pen.you will prbably need to trim spring as too much pressure in unit sends transmitter crazy.
as for unit cheap materials put together by monkeys its ok for money.

4 out of 5 stars Before assuming the unit it is faulty...   August 9, 2007

I thought my unit was faulty when using with a *new* Zen Vision M player so I tried it with a friend's [year old] ipod and it worked fine. It seems that the EU volume limit set on the new Zen player is too low for the kingston to operate properly (even with the Zen volume turned up full the sound that came out of the stereo was way too low). There is a fix, however, and this involves re-flashing the firmware of the Zen Micro player with the US firmware which has no volume limit. Now the unit works fine (volume level good and sound quality good).

So, in short, if you have a new MP3 player that was made for the EU this FM transmitter may fall short of the mark with regard to the volume of the transmitted sound. So check whether you can remove the volume limit of your player before buying.

Most people will have an MP3 player but no digital input on their CD player so the FM transmitter is the only way to make use of their music (or audiobooks). I have previously purchased an FM transmitter for my iPod which turned out to be virtually useless as there seemed to be interference all the time.

I made a decision to purchase this particular piece of kit vs the cheaper models as I figured you get what you pay for and for 16, it wasn't going to break the bank. I also chose this vs battery powered models which don't have the same footprint, but if you use it a lot you will be spending a fair bit on batteries. The device itself allows you to save 3 frequencies and the frequency range is from 88.1 to 107. I have driven all round Edinburgh and found I never had any problems on 88.1. As Edinburgh is a reasonably big city, I think this bodes well for other people.
FYI, I have used this in a peugot 106 with the aerial directly above and a Vauxhall Meriva with the aerial at the rear and I have never had any problems in either of them.

Downsides/ Problems - It sticks out a little from your cigarette lighter socket, make sure you gearstick isn't too close :-)
Makes sure the volume on your mp3 player is set high enough or else it turns itself off.

4 out of 5 stars Very good but you must experiment!   August 3, 2007

Having owned my Kensinton transmitter for about one month, I have given it a good road test. You may find it difficult to find a wave length on your radio that is unoccupied especially in the South East, I used 87.9 which is just to one side of a station and it works fine. I have an old Astra estate which has a rear mounted aerial, the ciggie lighter is on the dashboard which means a big distance between transmitter and aerial although it works fine most of the time it drops out occasionally. I have solved this by fitting a socket at the rear of the center console putting it much nearer the aerial and it works near perfect. The sound quality is very good but you must get the volume on your player right too loud it will distort, too quiet it will hiss. All in all it is a good buy even more so now amazon have reduced the price, but you must be prepared to experiment to get the best performance.
