5 out of 5 stars FM transmitter that works as it says on the tin   August 3, 2008
A. Milne
A fantastic FM transmitter. I've been using this whilst driving around the UK to transmit from an MP3 to a generic Volvo radio. In my car, the radio aerial is at the rear and I have the transmitter sat loose on the passenger front seat with the MP3 player; this works fine. A couple of tips when using this transmitter:

(1) I've found it works best when powered from the 12V cig lighter of the car. When powered from the AA cell it doesn't have sufficient power for a clear FM signal.

(2) Don't use the autoscan, instead tune it to a frequency you've found to be empty as you travel around. I found 107.9MHz is best around the UK. I don't think 107.9MHz gets used by any radio stations in the UK.

(3) Extra tip: up the volume on your MP3 to give maximum power to the transmitter. Don't over do the volume or else you'll overload the transmitter and distort your FM signal.

I've tried other FM transmitters and they've been poor compared to this one; I'm glad I paid the extra for this better product.

PS Please don't pollute the airwaves with these FM transmitters. Only transmit on a frequency you know is empty to avoid interfering with others listening to their favourite station.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sound quality - very easy to use!   July 15, 2008

I wasn't expecting too much from this product given it's one of the cheapest FM transmitters going. However, after using it for a few days with my iPod Nano, I can confirm it really is a top performer.

Hold down the autoscan button to set the scan going. It very quickly acquires 4 frequencies it thinks are free of other broadcasts and stores them as presets for easy access. Tune your car radio into the first preset and away you go. As you're driving along, you will come into range of different transmitters and pick up other broadcasts which might clash with your own signal. Just click the autoscan button to flick over to the next preset it already found, match it on your car radio and the interference is gone.

Sound quality is as good as I've heard from one of these devices. Nice bass and treble response, excellent signal strength when plugged into the cigarette lighter (as loud as a normal broadcast), and so far no interference. I'd recommend you turn off 'sound check' on your ipod as it's a bit quiet with it turned on (the same with all transmitters).

As it uses a standard headphone connector, you're not tied to an iPod either - any MP3 player will work.

You will really struggle to find a transmitter that's easier to use or better value. 5 stars!

3 out of 5 stars Works well for radio, hifi....but not in the car!   July 14, 2008
Mr. BB Shah (London, England)
The transmitter works really well if you're using it with a radio or hifi because you can sit it near the device and other radio stations won't interfere with it.

But in the car it's a whole different story. Interference is way too common. I had to put it on the back seat (highly impractical) for it to work /some/ of the time. Disappointed it didn't work as well as I'd hoped.

If you want it for the car you're probably better of investing in a headunit for both performance and sound quality.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth buying if you want any sort of sound quality   June 27, 2008

I bought this on the strength of the (largely) positive reviews, a few months back, for use in the car with my Sony NWZA818 but have been very disappointed with it. Sound quality leaves a lot to be desired, compared to my in-car mini-disc system. It is much "muddier" and indistinct. Have I got a dud? Am I fussier about the quality of the sound, or do other reviewers just have cloth-ears? I'd probably just about put up with this, for the benefit of having a large selection of music at my fingertips, but whatever I try there is always a high pitched whistle in the background which I find very annoying and distracting. As a result of this and the poor sound quality, I've given up on this transmitter, and will not waste my time on another. My advice to prospective buyers is in line with some other fellow unimpressed reviewers. Buy a new player for the car with proper connections, don't waste your money on this.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic piece of kit   June 16, 2008
V. J. Spears (cardiff UK)
Excellent product - does exactly what it says on the tin !

Easy to setup, easy to use.
I leave it plugged into the car cigarett lighter power connection, just pop the cable into the mp3 player headphone socket, crank up the volume on the mp3, click the preset radio channel and way to go - no more dullsville radio dj's endless jabber.

been in daily use several months now, never a problem.

As previous reviewers have said, not a 'hi-fi' product, but perfectly OK for the car journey.
