Travel Safety Tips
As the temperatures outside rise, more people will be seeking to travel to enjoy their weekends, holidays, and other special occasions. Awareness and travel safety should play an important role when planning any type of trip whether it be domestic or abroad, by rail or by car.
When planning to travel alone or with few companions, check ahead of time for any potential dangers. Are there recent crime waves or civil uprisings near or on the way to your destination spot? If there are areas that will require detours, it may be advisable to check ahead of time to see where these detours may lead you. Notify close friends and family of your travel itinerary. Even if you will be taking a cell phone, consider purchasing a car charger and a second, extra battery. Also consider taking a small bag of coin change or phone cards in case a situation arises that you may need to phone for assistance.
Always be aware of your environment. Even if you are uncertain as to where you are, try to look for places, signs, or architecture that could be used to identify your location should you become lost. If you are traveling abroad, take good care not to flash around large amounts of cash. Avoid doing “favors” for locals who may ask you to help move or deliver something.
Tourist traps are often expensive, but are generally safe places to be due to the high volume of visitors in the area. These areas are typically safe of violent crimes. Check in often with travel companions with family members or friends back home.
